Google Wave Helps Journalist Win Pulitzer Prize.

Posted by magician | Posted in Web | Posted on 19-04-2010

There have been a lot of discussions lately about how the Internet is changing traditional media. Viewpoints from either side tend to await the chance to discredit the other and we end up with story after story about how the Internet is going to be the death of pen and paper news.

It seems though that one group of people has been sorely missed: those who understand that the Internet is a tool for helping them to provide more interactive, better-written traditional media. It is with this in mind that we want to extend congratulations to Cory Haik and The Seattle Times for recent Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage, including the use of Google Wave.

You see, The Seattle Times is one of those organizations that understands how social media and traditional news go hand in hand. When the story broke about four Seattle-area police officers being shot, the Times decided to not only follow the story on their site, but to also get their audience involved by opening a Google Wave for the story.

The Wave allowed for real-time updates, not only from the Times staff, but also from readers. As users of the Wave dug through information across the Internet, evidence sightings, witness reports and school closings were given out immediately.

Cory writes, during a guest post on the Google Wave blog: Despite the fact that we reached fewer than 500 people and encountered a couple of technical glitches, Id like to think that using Google Wave was successful. And if the No. 1 rule of social media or at least my No. 1 rule of social media is that using it as its useful to you is the rule, then I am quite confident it was.

This is the second time, in recent weeks, that weve seen a Pulitzer being awarded for Internet-based news. That being the case, we suppose that kudos are in order for the Pulitzer Organization as well. It takes some bravery to break out of the molds of traditional media and reporting, and even more bravery to recognize when that reporting has set new standards by using available technologies such as Wave.

Cloud Printing: How Google Plans To Revolutionize The Way We Print

Posted by magician | Posted in Web | Posted on 17-04-2010

A big question of any cloud-based OS is how it will handle local tasks such as printing. Today, that question is answered.

Googles Chromium blog goes in depth and gives two viable ways that printing will be handled in the cloud and through the cloud.

Traditional printers will work on a through basis, where the request will be sent to the cloud, then come back to a local printer. Conversely, cloud-aware printers would use a model where the data is pushed to the printer from the cloud.

More after the jump.

Theres some discussion as to whether this is the most efficient manner, and of course some are concerned with security. But when it comes to those of us who spend the vast majority of our time using online applications, this is a breakthrough.

Cloud printing would also allow for wireless printing from mobile devices, such as Android-based phones. Further, you could access your email or documents from any Internet connected computer and print your documents to an approved printer in a location of your choice.

Of course, Google being Google, we have a lovely graphic to help explain things:

MySpace Launches Events Platform

Posted by magician | Posted in Web | Posted on 17-04-2010

A couple of months ago, we asked whether MySpace could make a comeback. Since that time, they’ve become #1 on Android and jumped into bulk user data sales.

Today, MySpace has unveiled a new events plaform.

Called MySpace Events, it presumes to be “a global events and calendar platform providing users with new tools to create, discover, share, and manage events across MySpace and multiple social networks.”

Key features include the following.

  • A new social and pop culture calendar that “combines your friends’ events, your events, events from your favorite artists, with pop culture events and sponsored events.”
  • Ability to buy concert tickets directly from an artist’s profile.
  • “Social advertising,” wherein advertisers can purchase ad space inside users’ social calendars.
  • Cross-plaform event viewing in which a user’s MySpace calendar includes Facebook events. “We’re providing features to share events on MySpace via the Stream and across the web including on Facebook, Twitter, and tiny url.”

The announcement focuses on the benefits to both the Myspace users and the individual, up-and-coming “artists” who have used the service to promote themselves. It will be interesting to see how bigger companies use the platform.
